My work is based on a building process that ultimately produces images that are at times impressionistic, but more often expressionistic. I am easily moved by the things we know and see around us. But I am more drawn to the adventure and excitement of composing something new without the pressure of imitation or representation. It is this freedom that propels me with a drive that becomes both intuitive and spontaneous.
Each work, once begun, takes on a personality of its own, dictating whether to follow the main theme or to take on a completely diverse direction. It is always an exciting journey. An important aspect of my work is a keen interest in exploring new and interesting surface textures and materials that will enhance specific areas of my paintings.
Though the majority of my work is oil on canvas, I am also doing monotypes which tend to follow the same principals as my paintings. The advantages of the monotype are that they can produce effects that are unique to that printmaking process. Also, the monotype, as the name implies, is one of a kind. I use the first printed image to begin my work. I add watercolors, acrylic paints and other media to the image until I am satisfied with my result. The result is what I call a Monotype Painting. It is considered an original work from which prints can be made.
